Improper Motion Needs Proper Action

12.03.08

Australia’s advocacy and support groups for Palestine have come together in a show of solidarity to protest a motion being put before the Parliament by the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd honouring Israel’s 60-year independence that came at the catastrophic expense of the Palestinian population in 1948 and which has continued to this day. That catastrophe is known as al-Nakba and this is what the Prime Minister and members of the Australian Parliament ought to be remembering – an injustice that was perpetrated not only by Zionists intent on establishing a Jewish state in another people’s land, but one that raised not a word of protest from the Western world, including Australia. Not then and not now. The motion is unconscionable, especially at a time when Israel has some 4 million Palestinian under its brutal military occupation and is subjecting Palestinians in Gaza to a calculated siege of starvation, deprivation and bombing attacks that violate an already very vulnerable Palestinian civilian society.
